Poverty Alleviation Ministry Launches Green Drive for Poverty Reduction, Climate Resilience
ISLAMABAD, June 3, 2026 — Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety (PASS) is set to launch a nationwide climate action drive on World Environment Day 2026 linking climate adaptation with poverty reduction and community resilience.
PASS in collaboration with the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), will feature a series of events across all provincial capitals as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The activities will also be rolled out in 57 targeted districts where the two institutions are implementing social protection and livelihood programmes.
Officials said the campaign is designed to integrate climate resilience into poverty graduation efforts focusing on green infrastructure, plantation drives and improved waste management systems to mitigate environmental risks and generate livelihood opportunities for vulnerable households.
The PPAF-led approach underscores linking income generation with climate adaptation, including nature-based solutions and community-level interventions aimed at strengthening resilience against increasingly frequent climate shocks.A broader public awareness drive will accompany field activities, with the federal government urging extensive media coverage.
In a communication from Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety , Syed Imran Ahmad Shah to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting was asked to mobilise state broadcasters, including Pakistan Television Corporation and Radio Pakistan, to amplify messaging on climate action drive.
The key components of the 2026 campaign include biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation strategies, improved waste management practices, and large-scale plantation drives aimed at expanding green cover and enhancing carbon sequestration.
Officials said the campaign will also highlight how climate vulnerability is being integrated into poverty alleviation strategies through climate-smart livelihoods, ecosystem restoration and capacity-building at the community level.
They added that the coordinated outreach and field interventions aim to strengthen public awareness while advancing practical measures for climate resilience, particularly in low-income and high-risk communities across the country.
The initiative is being implemented through a multi-sectoral framework involving the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, Paigham-e-Pakistan, provincial Centres of Excellence on Countering Violent Extremism, district administrations and civil society organisations.
