UN urges sustained climate action despite La Nina

Islamabad: The United Nations has emphasized the urgent need for continued climate action despite the temporary cooling effects of natural events like La Nina.
According to the UN, mitigation efforts remain crucial even as La Nina influences global weather patterns.
The UN has warned that La Nina, a natural climate pattern known for cooling the Pacific Ocean, may make a comeback this fall with a 55-60% chance from September to November and possibly continuing into late 2025.
Despite this likely return of La Nina’s cooling effect, the UN emphasizes that global temperatures will continue to rise, with 2024 still on track to become one of the hottest years on record.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) highlighted that while La Nina may bring changes such as increased rainfall in some regions, its cooling influence will not be enough to offset the ongoing trend of global warming. Heatwaves and above-average temperatures are expected to persist worldwide, underscoring the relentless pace of climate change.
Experts call attention to the “triple-dip” La Nina pattern’s ongoing legacy, noting that even as this natural event temporarily cools parts of the Pacific, it does not reverse the broader, long-term warming of the planet.
