Emergency Response Committee reviews Monsoon 2026 preparedness

Islamabad, 10 July: The Emergency Response Committee (ERC), constituted on the directions of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to oversee national preparedness and coordinated response during Monsoon 2026, held its second meeting today at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Headquarters.

The meeting was convened via video link by the Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, and attended by Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Musadik Malik, Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, HI(M).

Chief Secretaries of Provincial governments and representatives of disaster management authorities and district administrations presented detailed briefings on contingency planning, resource deployment, public awareness initiatives and coordination mechanisms established for the ongoing monsoon season.

The Committee reviewed preparedness status in vulnerable flood plains, urban centers, hill torrent regions, coastal areas and glacier-fed valleys exposed to risks of flash floods, urban flooding, landslides, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and other hydro-meteorological hazards.

The Committee expressed satisfaction over the preparedness measures initiated by provincial and district administrations while directing all concerned authorities to maintain a high state of readiness throughout the monsoon season.

Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring timely implementation of local contingency plans, protection of vulnerable communities, uninterrupted communication among response agencies and rapid mobilization of resources whenever required.

The meeting underscored the importance of a whole-of-government approach and reaffirmed the commitment of all participating ministries, departments and administrations to work in close coordination for safeguarding lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure during Monsoon 2026.

NDMA, as the Secretariat of the Emergency Response Committee, will continue to facilitate coordination, monitoring and information sharing among all stakeholders to support an effective national response throughout the season.
