Pakistan Eyes Nairobi Model to Revamp Margalla Hills National Park
Islamabad, July 24: Pakistan is exploring the management model of Nairobi National Park to develop a new vision for Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP) and revitalise the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB).

The proposal came up during a meeting between Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Dr. Deborah M. Barasa, on the sidelines of the COP31 Heads of Delegations Retreat in Shamakhi, Azerbaijan, the climate ministry said.
The Kenyan side expressed its willingness to support Pakistan’s efforts. Both countries agreed to work towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to institutionalise cooperation and facilitate the exchange of best practices in wildlife conservation and protected-area management.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the COP31 Heads of Delegations Retreat in Shamakhi, Azerbaijan, where Dr. Malik joined representatives from participating countries to discuss priorities and key negotiating issues ahead of the UN climate conference in Antalya, Türkiye, in November 2026.
Separately, Dr. Malik also met Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev and Türkiye’s Deputy Minister for Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, Ms. Fatma Varank, to discuss climate diplomacy and preparations for COP31.The meetings focused on the future of climate diplomacy and priorities for COP31.

The participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation and supporting each other on climate-related issues at international forums.
