UN humanitarian chief visits NDMA, discusses disaster preparedness
Islamabad, July 15: A high-level United Nations delegation led by UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher visited the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday to discuss disaster preparedness and humanitarian cooperation.
The delegation included UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan Mohamed Yahya and senior officials from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).
NDMA officials briefed the delegation on the National Emergency Operations Centre’s capabilities and Pakistan’s disaster management system, highlighting the use of technology, early-warning mechanisms and coordination arrangements to reduce disaster risk.

NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik outlined initiatives to strengthen regional cooperation and enhance disaster risk reduction through next-generation technologies, improved early-warning systems and closer coordination among emergency responders and resource providers.
The delegation was also briefed on NDMA’s coordination with federal and provincial authorities, security institutions, academia and international humanitarian partners to improve preparedness and response.
Briefing topics included risk communication, anticipatory action, resource mobilisation and international coordination for relief operations.Officials demonstrated the Disaster Lens 2026 platform and a series of Comprehensive International Simulation Exercises (CISE) designed to strengthen preparedness and response.

The UN delegation appreciated NDMA’s capabilities and expressed interest in expanding cooperation on humanitarian assistance and emergency response.Both sides agreed to deepen institutional cooperation to tackle the growing humanitarian challenges posed by climate change and increasingly complex disasters.
