Pakistan, UN Agree to Boost Climate Resilience, Disaster Preparedness
Islamabad, July 1: Pakistan and the United Nations on Wednesday agreed to strengthen cooperation on climate resilience, disaster preparedness and humanitarian response during a meeting between Climate Change Minister Dr. Musadik Malik and UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Mohamed Yahya.
Dr. Malik congratulated Mr. Yahya on his appointment and said the United Nations’ humanitarian work remains one of its most significant contributions to the international community. He also acknowledged the UN’s support for countries responding to humanitarian emergencies and building resilience to climate-related disasters.
The two sides discussed expanding collaboration between the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination and the UN system, with a focus on climate resilience, disaster preparedness, sustainable development and humanitarian response.
They also agreed to develop a roadmap for joint initiatives over the coming years after identifying priority areas for long-term engagement. Both sides underscored the importance of close coordination with provincial governments to ensure the effective implementation of climate and humanitarian programmes at the local level.
