PPP Vice President and Senator Sherry Rehman said plastic covers were still being used on books at some major shops in the capital despite the existing ban.

She said the issue had also been discussed with the Ministry of Interior. During inspections, shopkeepers often claimed that the plastic used for book covers was biodegradable.

However, the ministry had informed her that Pakistan currently had neither a laboratory nor an established standard to determine whether plastic was biodegradable, she said.

The amendment seeks to remove this ambiguity by imposing a complete ban on all types of plastic in Islamabad, without exemptions for any user, Senator Rehman said.
